Europese Commissie onderzoekt Meta AI-chatbot in WhatsApp

De Europese Commissie (EC) gaat onderzoeken of de AI-chatbot van Meta in WhatsApp in overeenstemming is met de Europese regelgeving. Aanleiding is een verzoek van Europarlementariër Veronika Cifrova Ostrihonova, die signalen ontving van bezorgde gebruikers. De AI-functie is momenteel niet uit te schakelen of te verwijderen uit de WhatsApp-interface.

Meta AI-knop in WhatsApp roept vragen op

“Noticed something new in your WhatsApp or Messenger chats lately? That little blue circle — Meta AI — is Meta’s new assistant, meant to help you find ‘relevant content,'” aldus Ostrihonova die zo haar vraagtekens heeft namens de EC. “But here’s the catch: 👉 You can’t turn it off! And that raises real questions about user control and digital safety.”

Ze vervolgt: “Several of you reached out to me with your concerns, and I hear you.  Yesterday, during a meeting of the @EP_SingleMarket at @Europarl_EN, I raised this issue directly with Executive Vice-President and Commissioner @HennaVirkkunen — asking whether the Commission was aware of this feature and if it aligns with EU rules. 🇪🇺”

Om meer duidelijkheid te krijgen, heeft ze inmiddels ook een schriftelijke vraag ingediend bij de Europese Commissie. “Ik ben dankbaar dat we zulke actuele en belangrijke kwesties op een constructieve en professionele manier kunnen bespreken, zodat de rechten van burgers centraal blijven staan,” sluit ze af.

De Meta AI-chatbot is inmiddels ook zichtbaar voor Nederlandse gebruikers, zolang de taalinstelling van de app op Engels staat. De knop is standaard aanwezig en kan niet worden verwijderd. De zorgen lijken vooral te gaan over de verplichte integratie van Meta AI, die draait op het Llama 3.2-model van Meta.
