De ninja waren vooral actief tussen de 12e en 19e eeuw, maar kenden hun gouden tijdperk halverwege de 16e eeuw. De vaardigheid van de ninja wordt <a title=\"Ninjutsu\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ninjutsu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ninjutsu<\/a> genoemd. De ninja bezat een breed arsenaal aan wapens. Verder maakten ze ook gebruik van psychologie, illusies en handige hulpmiddelen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Door hun bijzondere vermogens en de geheimzinnigheid waardoor ze werden omgeven spraken ze van oudsher tot de verbeelding. Ook in de moderne <a title=\"Film (cinematografie)\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Film_(cinematografie)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">film<\/a>&#8211; en <a title=\"Popmuziek\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Popmuziek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">popcultuur<\/a> en in <a title=\"Computerspel\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computerspel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">computerspellen<\/a> komen vaak ninjas of ninja-kunsten voor, bekend zijn bijvoorbeeld de serie computerspellen genaamd <a title=\"Ninja Gaiden\" href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ninja_Gaiden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ninja Gaiden<\/a>. Deze media hebben echter bijgedragen aan het feit dat veel mensen een vertekend, zoniet fout beeld hebben van de ninja.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>De Day of the Ninja stamt uit 1999 en komt uit de hoek van <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ninjaburger.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ninja Burger<\/a><\/span>, in 2004 zijn er wereldwijd events ontstaan rondom de parodie:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 2003, the creators of Ninja Burger declared that December 5 would be celebrated as Day of the Ninja. On this day, people are encouraged to dress as ninja, engage in ninja-related activities, and spread information on ninja online. December 5 was originally chosen because December 5, 2003 marked the release of <a title=\"Tom Cruise\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Cruise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Cruise<\/a>&#8216;s film <i><a title=\"The Last Samurai\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Last_Samurai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Last Samurai<\/a><\/i> (which featured a scene where samurai battled ninja).
