[Onderzoek] ‘Aantal gebruikers van Apple Pay neemt af’
Werd begin augustus 2015 nog bekend dat 11 miljoen gebruikers luisteren naar Apple Music, met Pay gaat het minder. Apple Pay is het betaalsystem van Apple uit 2014. Op de persconferentie van Apple 9 september 2014 hebben zij Apple Pay aangekondigd; een service die je onder andere terugvindt in de iPhone 6 en iPhone 6 Plus. De betaalservice lijkt op Google Wallet. Vooralsnog werkt Apple Pay nog niet in Nederland en werkt het enkel in Noord-Amerika en vinden er testen plaats in andere landen.
Minder gebruikers
Ten opzichte van het eerste kwartaal waren er in Q2 2015 minder gebruikers voor Apple Pay. Dat concludeert Business Insider Intelligence op basis van eigen onderzoek. Uit het onderzoek komt onder meer naar voren dat in maart 2015 nog 15 procent van de respondenten Apple Pay gebruikte. Dit aandeel was een maand later gezakt naar 13,1 procent. Bijna een derde van de respondenten zegt Apple Pay niet te gebruiken vanwege tevredenheid met hun huidige betaalmethode terwijl 34 procent niet goed wist hoe met de software om te gaan.
Verder wijst BI Intelligence erop dat Apple Pay nog niet breed beschikbaar is en niet alle iPhone-gebruikers een versie van de smartphone hebben die Apple Pay mogelijk maakt.
BusinessInsider zegt concreet over de terugloop:
- Customers are still struggling to see the benefits of using Apple Pay over another payment method. 32% of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users who said they didn’t use Apple Pay cited satisfaction with their current payment method, and 34% felt like they didn’t understand how the software worked.
- Apple Pay still is not widely accepted. Apple Pay was accepted at 1,000,000 retail locations as of July, but those locations only represent a handful of major US retailers. And a sizable chunk of national merchants are currently working to roll out their own competing mobile wallet, CurrentC. Until Apple Pay’s presence becomes less fragmented and more commonplace, there probably won’t be any tectonic shifts in usage. That said, 75% of shipped US terminals were NFC-enabled in 2014 which means that the base of merchants that can accept Apple Pay is growing quickly.
- Not all iPhone users have Apple Pay-capable devices. 40% of active iPhone users had upgraded to iPhone 6 or 6 Plus as of March. This leaves a large user base who might be interested in using Apple Pay but lack the hardware to do so.

It is worth mentioning that the data stands in contrast to an another survey from Auriemma Consulting, which we recently reported on. 42% of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners have used Apple Pay, according to the company’s June survey. That’s basically flat in comparison to earlier surveys conducted in February 2015 and April 2015.
