Internet Explorer 11 is de laatste grote versie van Internet Explorer. De Internet Explorer 11-desktoptoepassing wordt vanaf 15 juni 2022 niet meer ondersteund voor bepaalde besturingssystemen. Microsoft zegt dat het op 15 juni, na 27 jaar, officieel stopt met de ondersteuning van de Internet Explorer-desktoptoepassing. De browser wordt vervanger door de snellere Edge.
De app werd voor het eerst uitgebracht in 1995 als een add-on-pakket voor Windows 95. Later begon het bedrijf de browser gratis te leveren als onderdeel van het pakket. De browser bereikte in 2003 een piek van 95 procent marktaandeel, maar kon zijn positie niet behouden en het gebruikersbestand nam dramatisch af.
“Het afgelopen jaar hebt u wellicht gemerkt dat we ons verwijderen van ondersteuning voor Internet Explorer”, schrijft Microsoft-medewerker Lundersay in een blogpost. Hij beschrijft daarbij dat het bedrijf eerder in 2021 aangaf dat het zal stoppen met Internet Explorer-ondersteuning Microsoft 365-diensten.
Vandaag bevinden we ons in de volgende fase van die reis. We kondigen aan dat de toekomst van Internet Explorer op Windows 10 in Microsoft Edge ligt.
Over the last year, you may have noticed our movement away from Internet Explorer (“IE”) support, such as an announcement of the end of IE support by Microsoft 365 online services. Today, we are at the next stage of that journey: we are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications. Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode (“IE mode”) built in, so you can access those legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge. With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and more, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10.
