SXSW: ‘Apple neemt geen Netflix of Disney over, en start een eigen VoD dienst’
Apple gaat een eigen streaming videodienst opzetten. Er zijn geen plannen om een bestaande dienst zoals Netflix over te nemen. Dit zou het hoofd Apple Software en Services, tijdens het South by Southwest-festival (SXSW) in Austin (Texas) hebben gemeld en zo meldt CNN.
Instead, it’s pouring money into smaller investments that focus on how people will be using and consuming media in the future, according to Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue. In a discussion with CNN’s Dylan Byers at SXSW in Austin, Texas, on Monday, Cue said the company isn’t “throwing things up against the wall” to see what sticks.
“The financial part … isn’t the issue,” Cue said. “The issue,” he said, is finding the right investments.
Earlier in the day, Apple (AAPL) announced it is acquiring Texture, a digital magazine subscription service known as the “Netflix for magazines.” Financial terms were not disclosed.
Ook verwijst Cue al langer aanhoudende geruchten dat Apple Netflix zou willen overnemen naar de prullenmand.
Experts
Apple heeft de afgelopen tijd een veertigtal experts op het gebied van contentproductie aangenomen, zoals Jamie Erlicht en Zack Van Amburg die door Apple bij Sony werden weggekocht. Vorig najaar bracht de Wall Street Journal naar buiten dat Apple één miljard dollar uittrekt om originele films of series te produceren voor downloaddienst iTunes of een nieuw op te zetten streaming videodienst.
Cue vertelde dat Apple een dienst zal opzetten die zich, anders dan Netflix, zal richten op een kleiner aantal series van hoge kwaliteit. Andere grote concurrenten van een (s)VoD-dienst van Apple zijn Amazon (vooral in de VS en het VK) en Hulu (vooral in de VS).
