Social recruiting is not new. According to research collated by Staff.com, 93% of companies use LinkedIn to recruit, 66% use Facebook and 54% use Twitter. Currently, employers are broadly using social technologies for recruitment in two ways: to access and generate a database of candidates and to promote their employer brand. Accessing and creating a database of candidates is now easier than ever. Previously, organisations would work hard to create their own internal database, as well as using external databases generated by recruitment agencies and job boards. Now, however, organisations can simply turn to LinkedIn to find and search for candidate data and information. Social technologies have also enabled companies to promote their own employer brand by creating profiles and company pages on sites where they hope to find candidates, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. At a basic level, companies use these profiles to broadcast their brand messaging to candidates. Those that are more advanced use these sites to have two-way conversations with candidates. They use social sites as they are meant to be used – ‘socially’.
