Yes folks! It’s June 30, it’s worldwide Social Media Day!
Social Media Day (official hashtag #SMDAY) was started in 2010 by Mashable – one of the leading online sources of information for the connected generation.
Quote from Mashable on the why and how of Social Media Day: “We’re thrilled to celebrate Mashable’s fourth annual Social Media Day! We launched the event in 2010 as a way to recognize the digital revolution happening right before our eyes. We invite you to join fellow social media enthusiasts by hosting or attending a Social Media Day Meetup in your area.”
All over the world Social Media Day is adapted. A few examples:
- Missouri Officially Recognizes June 30 as Social Media Day
- More then 20 cities worldwide have declared June 30 ‘Official Social Media Day’
Social Media enthusiasts gather in ‘tweetups‘ all over the globe to celebrate Social Media Day – they share information, inspire each other and have fun!

To bad, my company is moving offices and could not join as organizer this year. In 2014 Enschede (The Netherlands), where our HQ is based. will see it’s first large scale Social Media Day Tweetup. Also we’ll try to put Social Media Day on the political agenda to get it officially recognized in the high-tech region Twente.
